- Below is a selection of papers that I found interesting. Background context for each paper is provided to peak your interest:
- Campbell Lee S, Shaz B, Arena R, Sloan S, Fung M, Ramsey G. Red blood cell products: consideration of the discrepant temperature ranges permitted for storage versus transport. Transfusion. 2012 Jan;52(1):195-200.
- The focus of this study was to determine if there is significant data to prohibit short-term storage of red blood cells (RBCs; i.e., <24 hr) at 1 to 10°C rather than 1 to 6°C, which occurs not uncommonly when RBCs are stored in a cooler for a patient during surgery.
- * Drackley A, Newbold KB, Paez A, Heddle N. Forecasting Ontario's blood supply and demand. Transfusion. 2012 Feb;52(2):366-74.
- Given an aging population that requires increased medical care, an increasing number of deferrals from the donor pool, and a growing immigrant population that typically has lower donation rates, the purpose of this article is to forecast Ontario's blood supply and demand.
- Patavino GM, et al. for the NHLBI Retrovirus Epidemiology Study-II (REDS-II), International Component. Number of recent sexual partners among blood donors in Brazil: associations with donor demographics, donation characteristics, and infectious disease markers. Transfusion 2012 Jan;52(1):151-9.
- Brazilian blood centers ask candidate blood donors about the number of sexual partners in the past 12 months. Candidates who report a number over the limit are deferred. We studied the implications of this practice on blood safety.
- Sayers M, Centilli J. What if shelf life becomes a consideration in ordering red blood cells? Transfusion 2012 Jan;52(1):201-6.
- The importance of understanding how patient outcomes might be compromised by the transfusion of older blood was underscored in a recent editorial by Ness who characterized the problem as “the most critical issue facing transfusion medicine.” He also made the point that planning by blood centers, in anticipation that studies might reveal the superiority of fresher blood, was essential.
- * Shehata N, Burns LA, Nathan H, Hebert P, Hare GM, Fergusson D, Mazer CD. A randomized controlled pilot study of adherence to transfusion strategies in cardiac surgery. Transfusion. 2012 Jan;52(1):91-9.
- It is important to determine the optimal Hb concentration for RBC transfusion for patients undergoing cardiac surgery because increased mortality has been associated with the severity of anemia and exposure to RBCs. Because a definitive trial will require 1000s of patients, and because there is variability in practices, a pilot study was undertaken to determine adherence to proposed strategies.
